Bringing An Offshore Wind Farm To VR

DIGITAL TWIN - TrAINING - Virtual Reality

Rentel and Seamade are offshore wind farms in the Belgian North Sea. They consist of 80 turbines and an offshore transformer station, 40 km from Ostend. Sending a regular maintenance crew to the station by helicopter or boat is costly, has a high safety risk and can be tricky depending on weather conditions.

The digital twin of Rentel and Seamade is a solution to reduce cost, increase safety and improve the efficiency of offshore wind farm maintenance. With the help of Cybernetic Walrus, Rentel and Seamade now have a centralized digital version of their offshore station, allowing staff to investigate situations remotely and reducing the need to send out a regular maintenance crew.

"We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and speed of delivery of the proof of concept for our project. Choosing Cybernetic Walrus for the next phase was a no brainer!"

Key Points

  • Challenge: Reduce cost and increase safety and efficiency of the offshore station operation
  • Solution: A digital twin of phyiscal offshore wind parks in virtual reality, where users can have an immersed experience of a real situation with VR glasses
  • Approach: A phased approach, starting with a proof of concept and then moving on to building specific solutions for Otary
  • Outcome: A working multiplayer digital twin where employees of Otary can meet online, reducing time and cost of travel and mitigating security risks.

Saving Cost & Time

With the help of the digital twin of Rentel and Seamade, the cost of maintenance is drastically reduced. By removing the need for a regular maintenance crew to be sent out, both time and money are saved. Moreover, by having a centralized digital version of the offshore station, it is possible to monitor the status of the station in real-time, allowing for a more efficient maintenance process.

Increased Safety

The digital twin of Rentel and Seamade also increases safety. By removing the need for a regular maintenance crew to be sent out, the risk associated with sending people to the offshore station is eliminated. Moreover, with its centralized digital version, it is possible to monitor the station in real-time, preventing any potential safety hazards from arising.

Remote training

Virtual reality provides a unique opportunity for staff to experience real-time digital twin environments remotely and join multiplayer environments over the internet. This allows them to work together, communicate, and share ideas in real time, no matter how far they may be located geographically. With VR, staff can experience the same environment as if they were in it physically – with all the benefits that come with the extra level of immersion and engagement.
