Collaborative Problem Solving In VR

EDUCATION - Virtual Reality

Scholengroep 20 is a trust for 15 elementary and secondary schools in the Zottegem and Geraardsbergen region in Flanders (Belgium).

They were trying to find a way to include some general skills, such as efficient communication and creative problem solving, in their curriculum.

Key Points

  • Challenge: The main goal is to promote cooperation among students.
  • Solution: A VR application that brings together ICT skills, communication, collaboration and learning to learn.
  • Approach: Starting with a brainstorm, taking Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes and Spaceteam as a base inspiration to craft a collaborative game.
  • Outcome: A VR application that requires one pair of VR glasses to play the game with multiple students. VR-KUUB contains 3 game types: Drones, Totems, and Octopus.

Drones

In this game, one of the drones is the ‘odd one out’ and must be shot down. To find out which drone, the student in VR must shoot at the panels the drones are holding.

When a panel is hit, it flips and shows an image. By describing these images to the other students, they can discuss what image does not fit in with the others. Then, the student can shoot the correct drone in VR.

Octopus

In this game, images have to be put in the correct sequence.

In the middle of the KUUB, there’s a huge robot octopus holding images in its tentacles. The student in VR describes the images to the other students. Then, they discuss together how they should be ordered.

Meanwhile, the student in VR needs to dodge barrages of octopus ink!

Totems

The student in VR is surrounded by totems. In front, there’s a mysterious panel with balls. Behind them, a pile of cubes sits on a table, all of them showing a different image.

The idea is to link a cube to the right totem. Forming a code combination with the balls on the panels draws a totem closer. Then, the student can put a cube in the totem. If all the columns are correct, the puzzle is solved!
